The All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel stated that the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium be handed over to the federation by the government of West Bengal, the city of joy could possibly host the finals of the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.
“This city needs a world-class football stadium. Salt Lake Stadium is there, but it’s a multi-sport venue. If the state government hands over the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium to us (AIFF), we will make it the most effective football stadium in the country, ” said Patel at the government’s felicitation ceremony of Atletico de Kolkata, the first champions of the Indian Super League (ISL).
“India could be hosting the U-17 Fifa World Cup in 2017 and I shall use my good offices to ensure Calcutta hosts the final, ” that he assured.
Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Bannerjee acceded and immediately said “done” to Patel’s request.
“I am happy to announce that we are ready to handover the stadium to AIFF. It’s my dream to see (U-17) World Cup being held in Calcutta. We now have beautified the area around Rabindra Sarobar, ” she said.
